The Cost of Doing Business & Corruption in Our County | Imara Crooms

Is Prince George’s County democracy for sale? For decades, we’ve been told that backroom deals and cronyism are just the "cost of doing business" in our local government. But with 15 years of experience leading democracy and governance initiatives globally, I know the "cost of doing business" is always paid directly by working families.

I am running to be the antidote to this culture of capture. As the only candidate in this competitive race who is 100% publicly financed through the Fair Election Fund, I’ve taken a legally binding pledge to reject corporate PAC, developer, and lobbyist money. Because this campaign is funded entirely by small donations from everyday neighbors, I answer only to the people of District 9.

Our democracy should be a tool that builds us up, not a system manipulated behind closed doors. To date so many Prince Georgians have joined our effort to reject the old standard, keep infrastructure pacing with growth, and build a transparent government that is actually on your side. GBACA Q&A On Infrastructure

⚠️ Our Rural Tier cannot handle endless sprawl without the infrastructure to match.

In this clip from the Greater Baden Aquasco Civic Association (GBACA)s candidate forum, I’m breaking down why responsible development prioritizes safety and local neighbors over developer profits.

A huge thank you to GBACA for creating the space to engage the public on this critical issue!

    No Data Centers in PGC

Imara has been a stalwart fighter against data centers even as leaders push them. When people say no, elected officials must listen. As a publicly financed candidate, Imara answer only to you, not tech oligarchs or developers.

Public Financing & The Fair Election Fund

Imara is the only publicly financed candidate in this race. Public financing is the antidote to corruption and the loss of faith in our democracy. Because this campaign is funded only by people, not developers, Imara is free to fight for you.

    Short: Progressive Victory Endorsement!!

I am proud to officially take the Progressive Victory pledge. 🗳️

In District 9, "business as usual" is dangerous. That’s why I’m the only candidate refusing every cent of corporate and developer money by pledge and by law.

From fighting for Medicare for All to demanding a moratorium on AI data centers, I stand with our neighbors, not boardrooms. I’m joining a national movement of organizers and creators to show that a better world is possible when we lead with principle.

    Join the fight! ✊

Short: Action Alert - Stop the Assault on South County

The County Executive just dropped a bill that targets our farms and forests for hyperscale data centers. 🛑 Despite a county-wide moratorium and massive public outcry, they are still trying to turn South County into a corporate dumping ground.

UPDATE: Thanks to the leadership of our Council Chair and the power of organized residents, this specific push has been held back for now, but the fight isn’t over.

I’m the only candidate in this race 100% publicly financed. I don’t answer to Big Tech; I answer to YOU. Help us protect the Rural Tier.

    Short: We Qualified for Matching!

We have officially qualified for the Prince George’s County Fair Election Fund! 🎉

To every neighbor who chipped in $5, $10, or $25: You made this happen.

By hitting our donor goal, we’ve unlocked public matching funds that keep this campaign independent from big developers and corporate PACs.

This proves that when we fight together, a better world, and a better District 9, is possible. Primary Day is June 23rd. Let’s go win this! ✊

    Left Handed Leftist Interview

I recently joined Carlos Childs of the Left Handed Leftist podcast to discuss why District 9 needs more than just a new representative, it needs a systemic overhaul. In this episode, we pull back the curtain on the "corporate-approved" politics of Prince George’s County and discuss how we move toward true economic justice.

We dig into the urgent need for holding developers accountable to the communities they impact and the critical lack of healthcare options available to our residents. I also explain why public financing via the Fair Election Fund is the only way to ensure our leaders aren't just sellouts to big-money interests. This conversation is for anyone tired of the same old promises and ready for a movement that centers the working class and grassroots organizing.

    Key subjects include:

    • Economic Justice: Moving the needle for residents, not just developers.

    • Healthcare Access: Addressing the disparities that leave South County behind.

    • Organizing Power: Why we need community organizers (not just politicians) in the halls of government.

    • Maryland’s Fair Election Fund: Using public financing as a tool to take back local politics.
